Description

Pomaderris gilmourii var.gilmourii is from the family Rhamnaceae and is one of two Pomaderris gilmourii varieties, the other being Pomaderris gilmourii var. cana (Grey Deua Pomaderris). Pomaderris gilmourii var. gilmourii is a medium sized shrub that grows up to 4 metres in height. The leaves are elliptical and grow up to 35 mm long and 4 – 13 mm wide. Leaves are hairless on the upper surface and have a superficial layer of fine, woolly hairs on the lower surface which gives the leaf a ‘shiny’ appearance. The flowers are cream to yellow, lack petals and form in clusters at the end of branchlets. Pomaderris gilmourii var. gilmourii differs morphologically from its sister species, P.gilmourii var. cana. Pomaderris gilmourii var. cana has a shorter sepal length and does not have superficial hairs on the underside of the leaves which gives it a duller, more grey appearance.

Distribution

Pomaderris gilmourii var. gilmourii’s distribution is restricted to the eastern and western ranges of Deua National Park in southeastern NSW. It is known to occur on rhyolite outcrops, steep slopes and cliffs in the Coondella Trig, Mt Donovan and Bendethera localities. The total number of subpopulations are currently unknown, as many areas of potential habitat in the region are inaccessible due to the steep terrain, making it difficult to survey.

Habitat and ecology

  • The species occurs in shrubland on skeletal soils formed from rhyolite and is confined to rocky outcrops, knolls and steep cliffs.
  • Very little is known about the species ecology, including reproductive ecology, seedbank dynamics, fire ecology and life history.
  • Flowers and buds have been observed throughout the year.
  • Asexual seed production is known within the Pomaderris genus. Individuals may be genetically identical and have a reduced adaptive capacity.
  • The species response to fire is currently unknown although most Pomaderris species are obligate seeders and killed by fire.
