Threats

Lack of knowledge about the dispersal, relatedness, and social structure of Egernia roomi. Group composition and gene flow within and between known locations is important to understanding species geographic and functional restrictiveness (i.e. extinction risk).
Highly restricted geographic range, increasing susceptibility to localised extinction.
Wildfire resulting in loss of vegetation, reduced food availability (i.e. of insects, fruit and berries), increased predation pressure, fragmentation of suitable habitat, and altered microclimate. This threat can be exacerbated by extended periods of drought.
Climate change resulting in a progressively shrinking EEO given the species’ restricted, high elevational range and occurrence in isolated and fragmented populations. Climate change is also likely to cause changes in habitat that make sites unsuitable and result in a reduction in habitat patch size and increased fragmentation and distance between habitat patches.
Disturbance and altering of the placement of bush rock, including rock stacking by visitors negatively impacts the species. This activity disrupts the microenvironment and structural attributes beneath the rock, rendering it unsuitable as a sheltering site. This threat is exacerbated at high visitation sites.
Excessive browsing of vegetation and fouling of rock habitat by goats alters the ecology of preferred habitat and adjacent areas. Accumulation of goat pellets can render shelter sites uninhabitable. Goats have been recorded within areas occupied by the skink.
