Scientific name: Myriophyllum implicatum
Gazetted date:
16 Jul 2010
Profile last updated:
03 Jan 2019
Description
Creeping matted herb, 2-10cm high. Stems are erect and unbranched with monomorphic (only one form) leaves. The leaves are alternate, linear and with entire margins, up to 5mm long and 0.7mm wide. Flowers are solitary in the axils of the leaves. Plants are dioecious (male and female flowers borne on separate plants). Sepals are absent in male flowers with petals cream-red in colour and 2-2.5mm long. Sepals and petals are absent in female flowers. Styles of the female flower are sessile, with white stigmas. Fruit is sessile, reddish-purple and about 0.8mm in diameter.
Distribution
This species was previously thought to be extinct in NSW; however the plant was recently discovered in the Pilliga National Park, south of Narrabri. It is known from Queensland and is listed as ‘Least Concern’ under that States Nature Conservation Act (1992).
Habitat and ecology
- Occurs in moist situations, extending away from fresh water.
- Recent population found in a large open partly inundated gilgai depression on cracking clay soil.
- Probably germinates opportunistically (with inundation).
- Flowering is reported from August into summer, and fruiting until February.

Threats
- Climate change.
- Habitat destruction by feral pigs.
- Habitat disturbance by 4WD vehicle access.
- Artificial changes to inundation, surface water flow, or artesian spring flows.
- Invasion of exotic species such as grasses, Lippia (Phyla canescens), and the potential emerging threat from African carrion flower (Orbea variegata).
- Very little known about species' distribution, especially on private lands to the north.
- High risk of extinction due to small population size and restricted distribution.

Activities to assist this species
- Restrict access by motor bikes, 4WD and other vehicles that use the open habitat as skid pans
- Control feral pigs in areas of known populations.
- Monitor threats and health of populations to guide management.
- Undertake appropriate weed control activities when necessary.
- Search for new populations in potential habitats.
- Map all known populations.
