Scientific name: Callitris endlicheri - endangered population
Gazetted date:
12 Nov 2004
Profile last updated:
24 Jan 2024
Description
Callitris endlicheri is a dark green tree with spreading branches and tough bark, which may grow to 10 m tall. Leaves are 2-4 mm long. Female cones are solitary or several together on rather slender, usually clustered, fruiting branchlets (15-20 mm diameter).
Distribution
The population of Callitris endlicheri on Woronora Plateau, in the local government area of Wollongong, represents the coastal limit of the species' range and is disjunct from other known populations of the species.
Habitat and ecology
- Throughout its range, the species is usually found on stony hills or ridges, common, from the plains to the coastal ranges.
- The Woronora Plateau population is restricted to a single outcrop of sandstone c. 2 ha in area. The soils at this site are skeletal sandy loams and the heathlands on sandstone outcrops in the area are restricted and highly distinctive.

Threats
- High frequency fire and/or severe fires from wildfires or hazard reduction burns can kill plants. However, total fire exclusion may limit recruitment.
- Environmental and demographic and environmental stochasticity due to its small size
- Herbivory by feral deer of seedlings is threatening recruitment.
Recovery strategies
A Saving Our Species conservation project is currently being developed for this species and will be available soon. For information on how you can contribute to this species' recovery, see the Activities to assist this species section below.
Activities to assist this species
- Protect population from all forms of fire until plants reach reproductive maturity.
- Once mature, ensure that the fire sensitivity of the community is considered when planning hazard reduction and asset management burning.
- Use fencing to protect seedlings from grazing where necessary.
