Description

A scrub community dominated by Coastal Banksia Banksia integrifolia subsp. integrifolia. Other canopy species include Broad-leaved Apple Angophora subvelutina. The shrubby understorey is diverse and includes species that usually occur in sandstone areas, such as Wedding Bush Ricinocarpus pinifolius, Riceflower Pimelea linifolia subsp. linifolia and Daphne Heath Brachyloma daphnoides. Contains many more species and other references should be consulted to identify these.

Distribution

Occurs only in the Elderslie area, near Camden, in Sydney's south-west. Remaining remnants are 15 ha in total.

Habitat and ecology

Unique as includes plants, such as coastal Banksia and other sandstone region species, which do not occur in the surrounding Cumberland Plain communities.
Occurs only on sand deposits on the old terraces deposited by ancient river systems of what is now the Nepean River, and requires deep sand soil to fully regenerate.
Intergrades with Cumberland Plain Woodland and river-flat forest communities.

Changed soil water levels and condition due to adjacent excavation.

Genetic inbreeding and loss of genetic diversity from small population size due to fragmentation

Climate change
Invasion by non-native plant species, including perennial pasture weeds, environmental weeds, escaped garden plants, and Pinus radiata
Predation by foxes and wild dogs
Impacts of domestic dogs and cats.
Grazing by non-native vertebrate pest species including deer, goats and rabbits.
Transmission of plant pathogens such as Phytophthora
Disturbance from recreational users e.g. bike riders, 4WD vehicles, walkers
Rubbish and garden waste dumping

Activities to assist this species

Promote public involvement in restoration activities.
Protect habitat by minimising further clearing of the community. This requires recognition of the values of all remnants of the community in the land use planning process, particularly development consents, rezonings and regional planing.
Maintain appropriate soil water levels and condition.
Implement weed control programs.
Undertake restoration including bush regeneration and revegetation.
