Description

A low spreading pea-flower shrub usually to a metre high but may be higher when competing with other plants. Its leaves are small and narrow. The wide orange-yellow and red pea-flowers are usually single, at or near the tips of the branches. Both the single orangey flowers and the stem hairs distinguish it from the similar and commoner yellow-flowered Dillwynia glaberrima and D. floribunda.

Distribution

The endangered population includes all locations for the species within the Baulkham Hills local government area. Only two confirmed locations are known, both near the junction of Wisemans Ferry and Sackville Roads.

Habitat and ecology

Occurs in vegetation similar to Cumberland Plain Woodland, on Wianamatta Shale soils.
Flowering occurs sporadically from August to March depending on environmental conditions . Pollinators are unknown. The lifespan is estimated to be 20-30 years. It is thought a minimum of 3-4 years is required before seed is produced.
Seeds are hard coated and are persistent in the soil seed bank. Dispersal is likely to be localised and ants are the probable vectors
Killed by fire and re-establishes from soil-stored seed.

The Scientific Committee has stated that threats include loss of habitat due to land clearing, road maintenance, weed invasion and inappropriate fire regimes.

Fire intervals of 10-15 yrs (where there are no needs for asset protection zones)
Weed removal and rehabilitation targeting localised occurrences of highly invasive weed species.
