Description
Banksia paludosa subsp. astrolux is a shrub with dense rusty coloured and matted woolly hairs on its branches. Flowers are golden brown to gold in colour.
Banksia paludosa subsp. astrolux is a shrub up to 5 m high (but is usually 1–3 m high) without a lignotuber. PlantNet (2022) notes the subspecies branchlets are rusty tomentose (covered with densely matted woolly hairs); leaves are whorled or alternate, narrow-lanceolate to narrowobovate, 4–13 cm long, 10–30 mm wide, leaf margins entire to toothed, lower surface white tomentose with midrib and lateral veins yellowish to brown, - glabrescent. The conflorescences (flowering spike) are 7–13 cm long, with individual flower perianths 16–20 mm long, golden brown becoming gold after anthesis, persistent.
Banksia paludosa subsp. astrolux is distinguished from Banksia paludosa subsp. paludosa in lacking a lignotuber and in being a shrub up to 5 m high versus a shrub up to 2 m high.
Distribution
Banksia paludosa subsp. astrolux is endemic to New South Wales (NSW), where it is restricted to a small area broadly northwest of Hilltop in the Sydney Basin Bioregion, Burragorang subregion (IBRA 2012). Most records are related to two main subpopulations in Nattai National Park, around the Point Hill area and along Fire trails W11A and W11D. A third small subpopulation is known near the village of Balmoral.
Habitat and ecology
- Banksia paludosa subsp. astrolux is a long-lived shrub that occurs as an understory species in
woodland on sandstone soils or co-occurs with other heath species on sandstone rock outcrops
(Baird & Benson 2021).

Threats
- Fire regimes that cause declines in biodiversity.
- Increased frequency of extreme temperatures, droughts and fire danger weather, and changes in precipitation.
- Dieback and disease caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi.
