Description

A recently described shrub 0.9 - 3.2m high with yellow, rusty to brown branches that are densely covered with hairs and sparsely armed with prickles. Adult leaves ovate, 6.5 - 12.3 cm, 6 - 8.5 cm wide. Juvenile leaves 9-12cm long, 6 - 8.5 cm wide. Upper leaf surface green and pickly with lower leaf surface greenish white, white or grey. Flowers are purple and anthers 4.0 – 4.3mm long. Fruit ball shaped, 14 - 19 mm in diameter, yellow to yellowish green.

Distribution

Restricted to the Taree – Wingham area on the mid north coast of NSW. Records indicate two locations near Mooral Creek and within Kiwarrak State Forest. Other known locations include Marlee and Killawarra in Greater Taree LGA. Also predicted to occur in Bellangry State Forest in Port Macquarie-Hastings LGA.

Habitat and ecology

  • Inhabits sunlit breaks in rainforest, rainforest regrowth on pasture land or eucalypt forest with rainforest understorey.
  • Grows on shallow or deep loams or clay loams.
  • All records below 200m altitude
