Description

Prasophyllum sp. Wybong (C. Phelps ORG 5269) is a terrestrial orchid that grows to approximately 30 cm high. It has a single dull-green basal leaf that is tubular and fleshy. The single flower spike has numerous fragrant flowers.

The NSW Herbarium considers Prasophyllum sp. Wybong (C. Phelps ORG5269) and Prasophyllum petilum to be synonyms (i.e. the same species). This taxonomic recognition will be released n the next Orchidaceae taxonomic update via the Australian Plant Census, which provides a list of currently accepted names. As it stands, the two species are treated as one for NSW regulatory purposes, with the distinction maintained under Commonwealth legislation.

Distribution

Endemic to NSW, it is known from near Ilford, Premer, Muswellbrook, Wybong, Yeoval, Inverell, Tenterfield, Currabubula and the Pilliga area. Most populations are small, although the Wybong population contains by far the largest number of individuals.

Habitat and ecology

  • A perennial orchid, appearing as a single leaf over winter and spring
  • Flowers in spring and dies back to a dormant tuber over summer and autumn
  • Known to occur in open eucalypt woodland and grassland
