Description

Creeping matted herb, 2-10cm high. Stems are erect and unbranched with monomorphic (only one form) leaves. The leaves are alternate, linear and with entire margins, up to 5mm long and 0.7mm wide. Flowers are solitary in the axils of the leaves. Plants are dioecious (male and female flowers borne on separate plants). Sepals are absent in male flowers with petals cream-red in colour and 2-2.5mm long. Sepals and petals are absent in female flowers. Styles of the female flower are sessile, with white stigmas. Fruit is sessile, reddish-purple and about 0.8mm in diameter.

Distribution

This species was previously thought to be extinct in NSW; however the plant was recently discovered in the Pilliga National Park, south of Narrabri. It is known from Queensland and is listed as ‘Least Concern’ under that States Nature Conservation Act (1992).

Habitat and ecology

  • Occurs in moist situations, extending away from fresh water.
  • Recent population found in a large open partly inundated gilgai depression on cracking clay soil.
  • Probably germinates opportunistically (with inundation).
  • Flowering is reported from August into summer, and fruiting until February.
