Scientific name: Zieria adenodonta
Profile last updated:

Description
Wollumbin Zieria is a dense bushy shrub up to 3 m high by 2 m wide. Its branchlets are warty and felted with soft hairs. The paired leaves are divided into three narrow leaflets, up to 20 mm long, with a dark-green upper surface. The undersurface is pale, almost white, with a strongly raised midrib. When crushed, the leaves emit a strong, unpleasant smell. Small, white, four-petalled flowers are held in clusters at the base of the leaves. They develop into small, green, egg-shaped capsules containing one dark seed.
Distribution
Occurs only near the top of Mount Warning in the Tweed district in NSW. Also occurs in South-east Queensland.
Habitat and ecology
- Dense shrubby vegetation on steep rocky slopes, with tea-tree, bottlebrushes and
grass-trees.
- Flowering occurs from May until September and fruit is present from November until January.
- Flowers are insect pollinated.

Threats
- Inadvertent damage from walkers and climbers.
- Illegal collection of plants or flowers.
- Track and lookout maintenance or expansion.
- Inappropriate fire regime including the exclusion of fire.
- Risk of local extinction because populations are small.
- Risk of local extinction because of a restricted distribution.

Activities to assist this species
- Raise awareness of the species and the need to protect vegetation occuring in sensitive habitats such as that of the Wollumbin Zieria.
- Observe or photograph wildflowers but do not pick or collect plants or flowers.
- Stay on established walking tracks at Mount Warning to avoid trampling native plants.
- Implement appropriate fire regime for the species.
- Identify plants and protect them during track works.
- Undertake research into the ecological requirements and fire ecology of the species.
- Monitor population dynamics and threats of known populations.
- Maintain viable ex-situ seedbank and/or living collection.
