Description

Small-leaved Hazelwood is a tall shrub or small tree growing up to 7 m tall, with smooth dark-brown bark with vertical fissures. The branchlets are very slender and hairy at the tips. Leaves are thin and lance-shaped with fine tips, and 4 - 9 cm long. There are four to eight irregular teeth on each side of the leaf. Small cream flowers are borne in clusters back within the leaves, and are followed by shiny succulent red fruit. These are oval-shaped, 8 - 10 mm long and contain a single seed.

Distribution

Small-leaved Hazelwood occurs in Nightcap and Mount Jerusalem National Parks and in the Tweed and Brunswick Valleys in north-east NSW. It also has a limited occurrence in south-east Queensland.

Habitat and ecology

Occurs in sub-tropical and warm temperate rainforest on less fertile soils derived from rhyolite.
