Description

Budawangs Bush-pea is a shrub that rarely grows to 1 m tall. Its small narrow leaves are crowded and warty and have a groove on their upper surface. The ‘egg and bacon’ orange and yellow pea-shaped flowers form dense clusters at the ends of branches.

Distribution

The species is known from a few sites in Morton and Budawang National Parks (Mt Currockbilly, Bhundoo Hill, Little Forest, Burrumbeet Brook and Corang Trig).

Habitat and ecology

Budawangs Bush-pea appears to prefer swampy heathland on sandstone.
Flowering is mainly in spring but has been observed in summer and autumn.

Threats

Phytophthora cinnamomi and Armillaria sp causing death and poor health.
Prolonged absence of fire may also affect populations if more productive species (e.g. Coral Fern) begin to dominate.
Phytophthora cinnamomi and / Armillaria sp may be present.
Low plant numbers and disease threats may cause local extinction.

Activities to assist this species

Ensure that personnel planning and undertaking hazard reduction burns are able to identify the species and are aware of its habitat.
Following burning, protect populations (where possible) from further fires until plants have reached reproductive maturity.
Monitor known populations to detect any changes in numbers or health.
Investigate reproductive ecology of this species and its response to fire.
Conduct further surveys in an effort to locate more populations.
Investigate susceptibility to Phyophthora cinnamomi and Armillaria spp.
