Description

Brown Pomaderris is a shrub to 3 m tall that has distinctively hairy stems. The stem-hairs comprise long brownish hairs above a thick white hairy under-coat. The leaves are up to 4 cm long and 1.5 cm wide and have toothed margins. The upper leaf surface is hairless; the lower surface is densely hairy like the stem. The leaf veins extend to the margins. The small, yellowish flowers have no petals and form dense clusters at the ends of the branches.

Distribution

Brown Pomaderris is found in a very limited area around the Colo, Nepean and Hawkesbury Rivers, including the Bargo area and near Camden. It also occurs near Walcha on the New England tablelands and in far eastern Gippsland in Victoria.

Habitat and ecology

Brown Pomaderris grows in moist woodland or forest on clay and alluvial soils of flood plains and creek lines.
Flowers appear in September and October.
The species is expected to live for 10 - 20 years, while the minimum time to produce seed is estimated to be 4 - 6 years.
The species has been found in association with Eucalyptus amplifolia, Angophora floribunda, Acacia parramattensis, Bursaria spinosa and Kunzea ambigua.

Threats

May be threatened by clearing associated with rural residential subdivision.
Threatened by too frequent burning because of proximity to residential development.
Forestry activities such as logging, burning and roads.
Trampling by people walking through the sanctuary
Illegal rubbish and car dumping
Weed invasion (e.g. African lovegrass) and canopy thickening in areas of the southern Cumberland Plain.
Deer grazing causes pugging and erosion, and promotes weed invasion
Grazing by cattle and macropods

Activities to assist this species

Ensure that personnel planning and undertaking hazard reduction burns are able to identify the species and are aware of its habitat.
Following burning, protect populations (where possible) from further fires until plants have reached reproductive maturity.
Ensure that species is considered in development and subdivision proposals.
Monitor the populations for changes.
Search likely habitat for other populations.
