Description

The Glandular Frog grows to 50 mm long. It has a broad olive-green stripe from the snout to the top of the arm and a narrow dark-brown stripe from the snout through the eye, broadening and breaking into patches along the sides. There is also a green stripe on the outer thigh.

Distribution

Known only from stream habitats on the eastern escarpment
of the Great Dividing Range from the “The Flags” near
Walcha in the south to Girraween National Park in the north,
a distance of about 250 km.

Habitat and ecology

Glandular Frogs may be found along streams in rainforest, moist and dry eucalypt forest or in subalpine swamps.
Breeding occurs in summer, and possibly in spring.

Clearing of habitat for agriculture or development.
Habitat disturbance from timber harvesting.

Reduction in water quality through pasture fertilisation and weed spraying.
Reduction of leaf-litter and cover of fallen logs through grazing and associated burning.
Chytrid fungal disease.
Degradation of habitat by weeds

Impact of vertebrate pest species including pigs.
Potential for predation on eggs and tadpoles by introduced trout.

Activities to assist this species

Avoid burning off in moist grassy habitats between December and April.
Maintain vegetation and leaf-litter around ponds, dams, drainage lines and other moist areas.
Conserve natural local patterns of flooding.
Protect streams from pollution.
Fence off suitable habitat to protect it from grazing and provide off-stream watering points for domestic stock.
Exclude logging around breeding habitat.
Control weeds.
Manage and control pest species including feral pigs and introduced fish in accordance with approved Threat Abatement Plans.
Clean footwear, equipment and tyres before and after visiting frog sites.
Only handle frogs when absolutely necessary.
