Description

Big Nellie Hakea is a woody shrub or small tree up to 7 m high with red-brown, smooth bark. It has soft, narrow leaves to 25 cm long and between 10 and 30 mm wide with three to seven longitudinal veins and no prominent mid-vein. The red and greenish-yellow flowers are clustered along a pendulous stalk in the leaf junctions during spring. The smooth, oval shaped, woody fruit is 2 to 3 cm long, and has a sharp beak at the end. This species was listed under the Threatened Species Conservation Act as Hakea sp. Manning River-Broken Bago State Forest and Hakea trineura.

Distribution

Found only in NSW. It is restricted to the hinterland between Kempsey and Taree, around Mt Boss, Broken Bago and Lansdowne. The closely related Hakea trineura occurs only in Queensland.

Habitat and ecology

Found on steep, rocky, sheltered slopes and in deep gullies in open eucalypt forest.
Commonly occurs at the interface of dry eucalypt forest and gully communities.

Threats

Risk of local extinction due to low population numbers.
Burning patterns which do not allow regeneration.
Forestry activities.
Potentially a high risk for susceptibility to Phytophthora infection, which may threaten the local persistence of the species.

Manage fire in areas of habitat to maintain the shrub layer and to promote regeneration of Hakea archaeoides.
