Scientific name: Eucalyptus camphora subsp. relicta
Conservation status in NSW: Endangered
Commonwealth status: Not listed
Profile last updated: 11 Oct 2022

Description

A small tree or multi-trunked mallee which can grow to 7 m tall. The upper parts of the trunk have smooth bark while the bark on the lower trunk is fibrous. The glossy green juvenile leaves are oval-shaped and quite large, growing up to 13 cm long by 6 cm wide. In contrast, the adult leaves are a dull blue-green to green colour and are broadly oval or slightly wider at one end. They are 6 - 10 cm long by up to 2.5 cm wide and have large oil dots. The bluntly-beaked oval-shaped buds and the flowers are held in groups of seven.

Distribution

Confined to Warra National Park near Backwater east of Guyra, where it is known from two stands (the largest of these two stands is just 20 m by 150 m in area) and Capoompeta National Park east of Bolivia. Two closely related subspecies occur on the central and southern tablelands.

Habitat and ecology

  • Flowering is from February to April.
  • Found scattered on open swampy flats. Eucalyptus camphora subsp. relicta requires swampy and waterlogged habitats, located on relatively infertile granite soils. Sites also appear to be protected from fire.
  • Eucalyptus camphora subsp. camphora is known to have slow growth, with seed dispersed locally by wind or gravity, and no seed dormancy mechanism.
  • Populations are also recorded as very restricted and localised, with Eucalyptus camphora subsp. relicta dominant in swamps in dense stands of 100+ plants.
