Description

A crooked tree up to 22 m tall with a dense dark-green crown. The broad, leathery leaves are heart-shaped at the base and paired on the stem. The lower leaf surface is paler green than the upper surface, and has prominent veins. The small white flowers are borne in loose clusters at or near the tips of the branches. The fruits are hard, ribbed and egg-shaped with a flattened end, and contain a single kidney-shaped seed. Heart-leaved Bonewood (Bosistoa selwynii) is now considered to possibly belong to the same species as Yellow Satinheart (Bosistoa transversa).

Distribution

From Maryborough in Queensland south to the Nightcap Range north of Lismore in north-east NSW.

Habitat and ecology

Three-leaved Bosistoa grows in wet sclerophyll forest, dry sclerophyll forest and rainforest including highly disturbed habitat up to 300 m in altitude.
Flowering occurs from January to May.
Ripe fruits are present from May to November.

Protect remaining habitat from clearing and development.
Protect areas of known and potential habitat from fire.
Fence areas of known habitat to exclude stock.
Control weeds within areas of known habitat.
Expand and connect remaining areas of rainforest habitat.
Support local Landcare groups and bush regeneration teams raise the profile of the species and undertake onground works.
Undertake taxonomic study to clarify status of this species and Bosistoa selwynii.
Undertake surveys to identify unrecorded populations.
Maintain viable exsitu seedbank and/or live collection.
Monitor population dynamic and threats of known populations.
Continue to provide advice regarding the species to consent and planning authorities.
