Structure

Open eucalypt forest 20-35 m tall, with variable density of shrubs, and a diverse, relatively continuous herbaceous-grassy groundcover The shrubs include a mixture of sclerophyllous and mesophyllous species.

Trees

Eucalyptus bicostata (eurabbie), E. bridgesiana (apple box), E. dalrympleana subsp. dalrympleana (mountain gum), E. dives (broad-leaved peppermint), E.radiata (narrow-leaved peppermint), E. robertsonii subsp. robertsonii, E. viminalis (ribbon gum).

Shrubs

Acacia dealbata (silver wattle), A. melanoxylon (blackwood), Bursaria spinosa (blackthorn), Cassinia aculeata (dolly bush), C. longifolia, Coprosma quadrifida (prickly currant bush), Hibbertia obtusifolia, Lomatia myricoides (river lomatia), and on poorer soils Leucopogon lanceolatus or Monotoca scoparia (prickly broom-heath).

Scramblers

Clematis aristata (old mans beard).

Forbs

Acaena nova-zelandiae, Arthropodium milleflorum (vanilla lily), Cymbonotus preissianus, Dichondra repens (kidney weed), Euchiton gymnocephalus (creeping cudweed), Glycine clandestina, Gonocarpus tetragynus, Hydrocotyle laxiflora (stinking pennywort), Hypericum gramineum (small St. Johns wort), Lagenifera stipitata ( blue bottle-daisy), Stellaria pungens (prickly starwort), Viola hederacea (ivy -leaved violet), Wahlenbergia stricta subsp. stricta (tall bluebell), Asplenium flabellifolium (necklace fern), Pellaea falcata var. falcata (sickle fern), Pteridium esculentum (bracken), wheatgrass), Lomandra longifolia (spiny-headed mat-rush), Microlaena stipoides var. stipoides ( weeping grass), Poa helmsii (broad-leaved snowgrass), P. labillardieri, P. sieberiana var. sieberiana (snowgrass)..

Habitat

On the tablelands from 600 to 1000 m (or more) above sea level, typically on moderately sloping hills and valleys, and occasionally on the steeper slopes of gorges and scarps. Their soils are clay-loams, mostly derived from shales or basalts, but occasionally, in restricted areas, from limestone.

Distribution

Major occurrences are in the western foothills of the Tinderry, Tallaganda, Brindabella and Snowy Mountain ranges, extending south into the Victorian Highlands. Further north, there are isolated and heavily fragmented occurrences in the Moss Vale district, and between Lithgow and Orange on the central tablelands. Small patches occur on limestone at Jenolan, Bungonia and Wee Jasper caves, and in the upper Deua River district.

Notes

Includes a species-rich groundcover. Forms a transitional rainfall sequence between Southern Escarpment Wet Sclerophyll Forests to the east and Southern Tableland Grassy Woodlands in drier parts of the tablelands. The northern part of the distribution has been extensively cleared for pasture or pine plantations, especially in the Moss Vale and Oberon districts, and very little area is protected within reserves. South of Canberra, however substantial areas remain, at least on steeper terrain, in the western foothills of Kosciuszko national park.
