Structure

Open eucalypt forest to 25-30 m tall, with an open sclerophyllous shrub stratum and a grassy groundcover. On steep slopes, or in areas where rainfall is higher, the trees are taller and shrubs are present in higher densities.

Trees

Eucalyptus angophoroides (apple-topped gum), E. bosistoana (coast grey box), E. cypellocarpa (monkey gum), E. globoidea (white stringybark), E. maidenii (Maidens blue gum), E. polyanthemos subsp. vestita (red box), with E. tricarpa close to the Victorian border. In higher rainfall areas E. obliqua (messmate) is also present.

Shrubs

Astroloma humifusum (native cranberry), Bursaria spinosa (blackthorn), Epacris impressa (pink heath), Hibbertia obtusifolia, Indigofera australis (hill indigo), Leucopogon lanceolatus, Senecio linearifolius (fireweed groundsel).

Forbs

Desmodium varians (slender tick-trefoil), Dichondra repens (kidney weed), Glycine clandestina, Gnaphalium gymnocephalum (creeping cudweed), Gonocarpus tetragynus, Hydrocotyle laxiflora (stinking pennywort), Hypericum gramineum (small St. Johns wort), Lagenifera stipitata (blue bottle-daisy), Plectranthus parviflorus, Poranthera microphylla, Senecio sp. E, Veronica calycina (hairy speedwell), Pteridium esculentum (bracken), Austrodanthonia pilosa var. pilosa (smooth-flowered wallaby grass), Dichelachne rara (plumegrass), Lomandra longifolia (spiny-headed mat-rush), L. multiflora (many-flowered mat-rush), Poa meionectes.

Habitat

Undulating to steep terrain, 300-700 m elevation, in the south coast hinterland and escarpment foothills receiving moderate rainfall (850-1050 mm per annum) distributed evenly throughout the year. Soils are sandy loams of moderate fertility derived from various granitic substrates.

Distribution

Hinterland south from Araluen and Belowra, principally in the western parts of the valleys of the Bega, Towamba and Wallagaraugh Rivers in far south-eastern New South Wales, with minor occurrences in far-east Gippsland, Victoria.

Notes

Distinctive and very variable tree composition and relatively diverse but consistent herbaceous groundcover. Intergrades with Coastal Valley Grassy Woodlands and Southern Escarpment Wet Sclerophyll Forests, where these adjoin.
