Structure

Open heath, typically less than 1 m tall, with prominent shrub and sedge strata and occasional emergent trees or tall shrubs.

Trees

Banksia serrata (old man banksia), Eucalyptus baxteri (brown stringybark) and Leptospermum trinervium (flaky-barked teatree) may be present as scattered emergents.

Shrubs

Allocasuarina paludosa, Banksia paludosa, Dillwynia glaberrima (egg and bacon pea), Epacris impressa (pink heath), E. microphylla var. microphylla (coral heath), Hakea decurrens subsp. platytaenia, Leptospermum continentale (prickly teatree), L. trinervium (flaky-barked teatree), Pimelea linifolia (slender rice flower), Xanthosia tridentata.

Forbs

Burchardia umbellata (milkmaids), Cassytha glabella, Dampiera stricta, Gonocarpus tetragynus, Helichrysum obtusifolium, Lindsaea linearis (screw fern), Entolasia stricta (wiry panic), Hypolaena fastigiata (tassel rope-rush), Lepidosperma filiforme, L. gladiatum, L. neesii, Leptocarpus tenax, Lomandra glauca (pale mat-rush).

Habitat

Exposed, flat to undulating coastal plateaux on elevated Tertiary gravels and sands, and more rarely in the granite hinterland. Generally found below 50 m elevation, but may occur up to 400 m elevation near Mt Nadgee.

Distribution

Restricted to coast south from Pambula, extending along the Gippsland coastline (Vic).

Notes

A distinctive group of assemblages whose composition varies with soil drainage. Grades into Coastal Swamp Heaths on poorly drained soils and South Coast Lithic Dry Sclerophyll Forests on more freely draining soils. A high-altitude variant occurs on the Howe Range. Restricted distribution but well represented in conservation reserves.
