Structure

Mosaics of closed to open herbland and grassland, occasionally with emergent shrubs

Trees

None

Shrubs and vines

Sclerostegia arbuscula, occasionally with Avicennia marina

Forbs, graminoids and pteridophytes

Sarcocornia quinqueflora ssp. quinqueflora, Juncus kraussii, Sporobolus virginicus, Samolus repens, Austrostipa stipoides, Suaeda australis, Apium prostratum, Baumea juncea, Limonium australe, Selliera radicans, Zoysia macrantha, Gahnia filum, Wilsonia backhousei, Phragmites australis, Triglochin striata, Disphyma crassifolium ssp. clavellatum

Habitat

Hypersaline estuarine mudflats subject to occasional tidal inundation or small soaks on exposed headlands receiving salt spray

Distribution

Scattered throughout NSW coastline extending along the Victorian coast

Notes

A widespread but locally restricted group of assemblages that vary in composition markedly within local mosaics. Adam et al. (1988), for example, define 25 floristic assemblages in saltmarshes of the central NSW coast. Saltmarshes have limited floristic affinities with Mangroves. Saltmarshes have been depleted by clearing and landfill for coastal developments.
