Threatened species

Priority actions by type of threatened species

The Department of Environment and Conservation has prepared a Priorities Action Statement (PAS) to promote the recovery of threatened species and the abatement of key threatening processes in New South Wales.

The Priorities Action Statement identifies a number of broad strategies to help threatened plants and animals recover in New South Wales. Each of these strategies have more specific priority actions within them.

Select an item from the list below to see priority actions for all species of that type.

Type of species

What type of species or threatening process do the priority actions apply to?

Name of species

Name of species or threatening process that the priority actions apply to.

Only show results for Priority....
There are 2 threatened species in New South Wales matching the above criteria which have current Priority action plans. A total of 19 current Priority actions have been identified to help recover these species.

Liaise with land managers to ensure that sites where the species occurs remain secure and protected from illegal collection of individuals. Phaius australis Southern Swamp Orchid Plant > Orchids High
Ensure that disturbances to populations from grazing, recreational use, vehicles and illegal dumping are minimised by identifying and protecting key sites. Phaius australis Southern Swamp Orchid Plant > Orchids High
Remove or control infestations of exotic weeds where they encroach on populations of the species. Phaius australis Southern Swamp Orchid Plant > Orchids High
Manage ground water and levels of nutrient run-off in close proximity to populations to minimise detrimental impacts. Phaius australis Southern Swamp Orchid Plant > Orchids High
Liaise with planning authorities to ensure that developments proceed with minimal impacts on existing populations. Phaius australis Southern Swamp Orchid Plant > Orchids High
Data management - develop a database to record locations, size of populations, threats, habitat, land tenure and genetic origin of ex situ collections. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple High
Conduct a program to investigate the biology and ecology of Phaius spp, including population dynamics, seedling recruitment and establishment, seedling survivorship, fire management and impacts of weeds. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple High
Investigate taxonomy between two species of Phaius, through genetic and morphometric study. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple Low
Undertake population monitoring on a regular basis. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple High
Investigate and implement reservation and protection options for populations outside reserves. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple High
Protect populations that are at risk from plant theft by fencing or other appropriate measures. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple High
Ensure landholders and land managers are aware of their responsibilities with respect to management of threatened species. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple High
Control weeds that are considered a threat to the species in areas of species habitat. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple High
Control feral animals, particularly pigs, in habitat areas. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple High
Manage fire frequency and intensity in the vicinity of known populations. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple High
Establish ex situ collections for all populations, and document origin. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple High
Catalogue origins of and enhance and manage existing ex situ collections. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple Medium
Investigate sites suitable for reintroduction of ex situ material especially where suitable genetic material of authentic genetic origin is available to restore populations to areas where wild populations are now extinct. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple Low
Conduct surveys in potential habitat to complement and add to existing survey records and data. Phaius australis Swamp Orchid Multiple Low
